This
is one of the two common reactions you seem to get when you ask an
author to talk about their work. 49.5% of the time they will go
crazy telling you details you can't understand, 49.5% they'll just
ignore you and hide the details from your potentially uncaring mind,
but only 1% of the time will they be able to casually share information.
Apparently poor Tristam just doesn't know this yet.
